Message from the Premier
On behalf of the citizens and Government of Manitoba, it is my pleasure to welcome all those participating in the 1st annual Abe Yanofsky Memorial Tournament from August 29-September 1, 2003.
I want to take this opportunity to welcome all those who are visiting from across Canada and the United States. I am confident that we are true to our provincial motto - Friendly Manitoba and that there are more than few things besides chess tournaments that we do well here. Whether it is going for a stroll along our famous Riverwalk, taking in a show, or dining in any of our fine restaurants, there is no shortage of things to do and see in Winnipeg.
Chess is a game that has been around for centuries and has developed a reputation as an intense intellectual struggle. It is a game that requires skill, perseverance, and patience. I know Manitobans will benefit from watching some of the great competitors at this first annual event.
Again, I am very pleased to welcome you to our community. I want to wish all players the best of luck in their matches. All the best !
Gary Doer

Gary Doer
Message from the Minister of Canadian Heritage
Greetings to all those taking part in the First Annual Abe Yanofsky Memorial Tournament.
Chess is not our national sport, but it is one of the most popular games in Canada, played by people of all ages, from all backgrounds. The Abe Yanofsky Memorial Tournament pays tribute to a great Canadian chess champion and the first International Grandmaster in the Commonwealth. In addition, it brings together talented chess players from across the country, as well as some from beyond our border, to test one another's skill.
As Minister of Canadian Heritage, I would like to thank the Manitoba Chess Association for hosting this event in a city that was important to Mr. Yanofsky. My best wishes to all the competing players.
Enjoy the Tournament!
Sheila Copps Minister of Canadian Heritage

Bon tournoi!
Sheila Copps Minister of Canadian Heritage
